Case Study

THE BRIEF

Wilson Coatings Limited was appointed by South Kesteven District Council to carry out remedial works to pedestrian walkways at Grantham Town Football Stadium.

The existing coating system had failed, resulting in reduced slip resistance, localised water ingress, and surface degradation. The objective of the works was to remove the failed system and install a durable, anti-slip waterproofing solution suitable for a high-traffic public environment.

Following inspection, a Tor Coatings Elastadeck Anti-Slip System was specified, providing a 15-year design life and long-term performance.

Condition of Existing Substrate
Inspection of the existing walkways identified:
• Failure of the previous coating system
• Loss of adhesion in several areas
• Localised surface degradation
• Reduced slip resistance

Although the substrate remained structurally sound, full mechanical preparation was required to ensure successful installation of the new system.

Preparation Works
All existing coatings were removed using mechanical preparation methods. This included:

• Mechanical scrabbling to remove failed coatings
• Preparation back to a clean, sound substrate
• Removal of all dust and debris
• Final inspection prior to system application

This ensured full compatibility and adhesion of the new waterproofing system.

Installed System – Tor Coatings Elastadeck (15-Year System)
The following system was installed in accordance with Tor Coatings’ technical guidance:

1. Primer – to regulate porosity and promote adhesion
2. Elastadeck Basecoat – forming the waterproof membrane
3. Anti-slip aggregate – broadcast into the wet basecoat
4. Elastadeck Topcoat – sealing the surface and providing durability

System Benefits
• 15-year design life
• Seamless, fully bonded waterproofing system
• High slip resistance for public areas
• Excellent UV and weather resistance
• Low maintenance requirements

Health & Safety
All works were carried out in accordance with site-specific RAMS, CDM Regulations 2015, and manufacturer guidelines. Safe access arrangements and controlled working areas were maintained throughout the project.

Project Outcome
The completed works delivered a durable, safe, and visually clean anti-slip surface. The refurbished walkways now provide long-term waterproof protection and improved safety for stadium users, meeting the client’s operational and safety requirements.
